Bird Watching is the activity of observing the behavior and activities of the birds in there natural habitat. This activity may be performed for recreational purposes or as a scientific activity. The Dominican Republic is a haven for birdwatchers as it is home to over 300 species of birds that either permanently or as a migration layover. In fact, more than 130 species are located in the Jaragua National Park alone. While 15 species of the birds are either endangered or threatened like the bay-breasted cuckoo, LaSelle thrush and Hispaniolan crossbill. Another Twenty-seven species are endemic, meaning that they are only found on the island of Hispaniola. One specific bird of special interest is the palmchat which is commonly found in this region because it is not only an endemic species but an endemic family. Several tour operator and birding clubs in the United States are offering such trips to the visitors with expert ornithologists. Local guides can also be hired for this activity. One such guide is the leading Dominican Republic environmentalist Kate Wallace. She is well known for her former work as a naturalist with the Massachusetts Audubon Society but has been living in Dominican Republic for over a decade and began guiding bird watchers in Dominican Republic in 1998.
