Although the word safari initially appeared a synonym to hunting and touring expeditions in East Africa, it is now used generally to mean any long or adventurous journey or expedition, e.g. whale watching safaris, photography safaris, eco-safari, etc. Typically a safari is an overland journey usually referring to a trip by tourists to areas known for hunt however in more modern times watching and photographing wild animals and other wildlife are also more commonly termed as a safari holiday.
